Why does my child need to get their vaccines at the youngest recommended age?

In Nevada, a child enrolling in a childcare/accommodation facility should receive their vaccines at the youngest recommended age per the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). This is so that children and their peers are protected at the earliest time possible and limits disease transmission further.

Does my child need to get their vaccine at the exact age listed (6 months, 15 months, etc) or is there a grace period?

Children enrolling in a childcare/accommodation facility need to get their vaccine within 30 days of the age listed. For example, when receiving dose 3 of Hepatitis B, they should receive that dose within 6 months, 30 days old. This applies to all the other vaccines on the schedule as well.

If your child is catching up on their vaccine doses, your pediatrician should follow the official CDC catch-up immunization schedule for children and adolescents in order to continue to attend the childcare/accommodation facility.

What if my provider gives the recommended vaccine too early?

In some cases, a medical provider may give a vaccine early depending on special circumstances. For the purpose of childcare admittance, your child should receive their vaccines at the “age required” listed on the immunization schedule. For example, if your child received their 4th dose of DTaP at 12 months old, they should receive another dose after 15 months old to be in compliance with childcare immunization requirements.
